As a professional speaker, I know that we love listening to our own introductions. The MC generally blathers on and on about our accomplishments. By the time it is my turn to speak, I am usually embarrassed enough that I begin by telling the audience, "I've been married, divorced, and annulled twice. My second husband left me for an older woman. I raised four kids as a single parent, had them in college for 17 years in a row, and never earned more that 27,000 a year in my life." With that the audience relaxes, knowing I'm one of them. I don't act humble, just real.
